Parking and Transportation is excited to announce the launch of VolPark, a new commuter solution app designed for Vols by Vols.
Developed to incorporate elements and features proposed by student groups in UT’s Heath Integrated Business and Engineering Program, the VolPark app uses crowdsourced data to provide real-time parking lot occupancies and deliver guided navigation to the best available parking areas based on a user’s permit type.
VolPark provides information for more than 150 parking areas on campus, not just the 15 lots or garages currently equipped with space counting technology. The accuracy and predictability of available spaces will continue to improve as the number of VolPark users increases.
“We heard the student demand for a crowd-based app to streamline the commuting process, and we’re really proud to be able to develop and offer VolPark in response to that demand,” said Executive Director of Parking and Transportation Tanara Teal-Tate. “Over the last year, we have put a lot of effort and resources into transforming the parking and transportation experience on campus, and VolPark is just one more tool available to help improve parking reliability for all members of the campus community.”
In addition to real-time parking occupancies and guided navigation based on permit type, VolPark also provides the functionality to save preferred lots and quickly see the top available areas based on permit type in real time – all features requested by UT students. While the data is crowdsourced, the only outgoing data from a user’s device is a randomly generated anonymous ID and the latitude, longitude, timestamp of a parking event.
All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to join the VolPark app and help fellow Vols navigate campus more efficiently.
